Pats/Jets, Seasonals, and the Return of the MILF

Are the Pats going to run the score up against the whistle-blowing Jets? The markets think so with one of the largest point spreads in NFL history at -24.

The Patriots are the fifth team with a 13-0 record, joining the 1934 Bears, 1972 Dolphins, 1998 Broncos and 2005 Colts. I remember when the 13-0 Broncos lost to the lowly Giants (5-8 at the time). The Jets are a little more lowly at 3-10.

Want to know the chances of your team making the playoffs? (The Broncos are a depressing 15%.)

(Note: Fosback published the fantastic Stock market logic: A sophisticated approach to profits on Wall Street in the 1970s. . .)

Here is a good Hulbert article on the Fosback Seasonal Timing strategy. I believe Peter Eliades runs the Plutus hedge fund with similar strategies. . . :

The idea behind this timing system, which traces to research conducted by Norman Fosback in the early 1970s, is that the stock market has a bullish bias around the turns of each month and in the sessions immediately prior to each exchange holiday. At all other times, the model calls for being out of stocks and safely invested in a money market fund. It therefore incurs very little risk.

And yet, unlike most other market-timing systems that are in cash more than half the time, this system historically has been able to make just as much money as the overall stock market if not a tad bit more. Since the beginning of 1982, for example, according to the Hulbert Financial Digest’s calculations, a portfolio that switched between the Dow Jones Wilshire 5000 index and 90-day T-bills on this system’s signals would have produced a 13.7% annualized return through the end last year, in contrast to 12.9% for buying and holding.
